What is happening to poverty? (Rammelt and Surace)

In July 2012 the Secretary General of the UN announced that “the number [actually, the proportion] of people [in de developing world] living in extreme poverty has been reduced by half, well ahead of schedule” (Comments added. See UN goal of halving extreme poverty has been achieved, or has it? (UN, WB)). However, there is a lot of uncertainty in the data and methodology, which suggests that poverty is underestimated. Here’s a short video on the matter. For a more detailed critique, see How to underestimate absolute poverty (Thomas Pogge), and see our article Are We Really There Yet? The MDGs and Extreme Poverty.

(We’re very grateful to Thomas Pogge for the constructive feedback.)
