Core periphery theory (Allen Sens)

Dependency theorists have developed a designation and division of nations into Cores and Peripheries (Hans Singer; Raul Prebisch; Andre Gunder Frank; Hernando Dos Santos). In the global economy, Core countries are in a monopoly position and influence the terms of trade in their favour, while Peripheries typically provide raw materials, commodities and cheap labour. In the 1970s, Galtung’s structural theory of imperialism added a crucial dimension to this representation of international dependencies: the Core/Periphery relationship reproduces itself between collectivities within countries.
