Cybernetics, self-organisation and power (Adam Curtis)

This is the second episode of “All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace” the 2011 BBC documentary series by filmmaker Adam Curtis, entitled “The Use and Abuse of Vegetational Concepts”. It investigates how machine ideas such as cybernetics and systems theory were applied to natural and social systems. It features the ideas of Jay Forrester, the Odum brothers, Buckminster Fuller, the Club of Rome, etc. Curtis argues that while the self-organising networks are good at organising change, they also leave people helpless in the face of power structures in the world. For the other two episodes, see here.
